Certification Exams

The Certification Foundation is an introduction to the key international privacy and data protection laws and standards as well as the general practice areas of information security and online privacy. The Certification Foundation exam is a two-hour, three-part, objective test and a requirement for ALL examinees pursuing certification. Successful completion of the Certification Foundation Examination is required for all candidates pursuing ANY of the certifications described below - though it does not constitute certification as a standalone exam.

The following exams are each one-hour, two-part objective tests held in parallel with each other after the CIPP Foundation Examination period has concluded. Each is a requirement for the certification it represents. For more detailed information about the certification process, including complete course outlines and study resources, please visit the IAPP Web site.

The CIPP is intended for entry-level to intermediate-level privacy and infosecurity professionals who have responsibility for privacy compliance in the U.S. private sector. The CIPP focuses on U.S. privacy enforcement and also explores trans-border privacy issues outside of the U.S.

The CIPP/G is an advanced certification exclusively for students of the CIPP/Government credential. CIPP/G candidates are U.S. government privacy officers, records managers, and/or infosecurity professionals as well as vendors and consultants who serve U.S. government clients. The CIPP/G exam covers the privacy laws, regulations and policies that are specific to U.S. federal agencies and departments.

The CIPP/C assesses understanding of Canadian private sector and public sector privacy laws as well as the roles and enforcement powers of the Canadian federal and provincial privacy commissioners. The CIPP/Canada is intended for Canadian corporate privacy officers as well as any professional who is responsible for the information risk management, information security, information auditing or legal compliance needs of clients or organizations based in Canada.

Testing is required in order to achieve an IAPP certification and each candidate must become an IAPP member prior to testing. Training for certification is optional. Once certified, all IAPP professionals must keep their membership status current as well as meet a minimum of 10 credit hours of continuing privacy education (CPE) each year in order to uphold their certification(s).
